About this course

Play is a powerful learning tool which helps children to make sense of the world around them. When children are immersed in free play, they are often “doing maths”, even when we as practitioners have not explicitly initiated an activity. We can take advantage of this to guide children’s learning and support their mathematical development.

Whilst we’re often more limited indoors, the outdoors allows children to learn and discover mathematical concepts on a big and messy scale. Outdoor spaces are excellent environments to support those children that learn with their whole bodies. By taking maths outdoors, we can encourage children’s desire to learn, discover, and follow the intrinsic motivations that our outdoor spaces provide.

Taking Maths Outdoors: Early Years will introduce you to new ideas, research, and practice to help develop your confidence in an outdoor learning setting. During this online course, you will:

  • Gain an increased understanding of how young children learn mathematical concepts and how using the outdoors can support this learning
  • Deepen your understanding of how outdoor spaces and the available experiences within them can increase children’s ability and understanding of numeracy and mathematics
  • Increase your knowledge of how mathematics provision can take place throughout our daily routines in the outdoors
