UN global goals for sustainable development

In 2015, world leaders agreed to 17 goals for a better world by 2030. These goals have the power to end poverty, fight inequality and stop climate change.

The 17 Global Goals

Guided by the goals, it is now up to everyone in the world to work together, with the sole focus of building a better future for everyone.

As LtL, we believe that much of our work in play and outdoor learning is underlined by a theme of children’s rights, sustainability, citizenship and responsibility. The UN Global Goals and the UN Rights of the Child have provided an international context of support for this.

A number of nations, including Scotland and Wales, have placed outdoor learning and play front and centre to the delivery of learning about issues of sustainability.

This is because outdoor learning and play provides immersive and sensitising experiences of the natural world, allowing pupils to develop understanding and take decisions, which are compatible with a sustainable and equitable society.

We see outdoor learning and play as a context for learning about these difficult issues, not as a simplistic stand-alone subject, but as a complex and interlinked learning experience.

Our values and passions

Our personal values and passion as educators and teachers will ensure that we create these learning opportunities, through play and in formal learning.

Through demonstrating our own personal love and care for the environment through enjoyment and action, we model this to our learners. By demonstrating our own global citizenship, we open the conversation and develop in our learners.

“Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world.”

UN Convention on the rights of the child (UNCRC)

Underpinning the Goals is the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child. LtL is committed to these rights through our work.

Our work involves supporting many to see play as a fundamental right of every child, and we would encourage you to explore the International Play Associations page about this.
