Taking Literacy Outdoors: Early Years

The outdoors provides a context in which early literacy skills can be developed in a holistic, child-led, and playful way. Our skills as educators can assist in creating broad experiences and opportunities for children to develop communication skills, a wider vocabulary, a love of reading, and the physical and cognitive skills they need for writing.

By their very nature, outdoor spaces offer a more comfortable environment for many children, adding something which can be hard to find indoors. As educators, we can take advantage of this intrinsic motivation through outdoor activities which build and extend children’s development.

Taking Literacy Outdoors: Early Years will introduce you to new ideas, research, and practice to help develop your confidence in an outdoor learning setting. During this online course, you will:

• Gain an increased understanding of the importance of how young children develop speaking and listening, reading, writing skills and how the outdoor space can support this
• Deepen your understanding of how outdoor spaces and the available experiences within them can increase children’s ability and understanding of all aspects of literacy
• Increase your knowledge of how literacy provision can take place every day in the outdoors
