Learning to Return Outdoors – learning outdoors as schools return
“I am Carley Sefton, CEO of The Learning through Landscapes Trust (LtL).
LtL is a charity founded 30 years ago to promote the use of school grounds in education. LtL was created with support from the Department of Education, as well as our wonderful patrons and board including Sir David Attenborough.
LtL has been responsible for developing countless projects that connect children and young people to their natural environment. We have developed school play-schemes and levied over £25 million pounds into schools.
Our core is teaching teachers to take the curriculum outdoors.
Like so many of you, I am on lockdown at the moment. Since LtL went into lockdown we have been looking at how we can use our 30 years of experience and resources to support schools when they return.
All indications suggest that schools will return with social distancing measures in place. We see the space school grounds offer as being key to doing this successfully. As teachers and educators ourselves, we understand the challenges this also brings.
As we develop this work, we are really keen to start speaking to educators about how we can support transferring some curriculum-based lessons into school grounds.
If you are headteacher, a department lead, an academy chain or a local authority we are keen to speak to you as we develop this program.
We work across all ages from early years to 18. We can offer training and support across lots of platforms including in-person where possible, training both online and across social media.
Most importantly we want to use our experience to develop something that genuinely works and will really help teachers and educators during what could be a difficult transition…
If you would like to be involved in the conversation, please do get in touch. I look forward to hearing from you soon.”
