Learning and playing outdoors helps develop social and emotional literacy and skills.
Outdoor Learning in International Schools
Our work supporting outdoor learning in International Schools has been over the last 20 years.
Many of our schools used the International Baccalaureate programmes (PYP, MYP, Diploma and Career) all share common themes that lend themselves well to learning outdoors and experiential play-based learning.
By engaging with real consequence and challenge, pupils learn to assess risk, gain knowledge about their own abilities and limitations, recognise and manage their emotions, and develop strong personal and interpersonal relationships.
Outdoor Learning is embedded in the International Baccalaureate approach, along with Learning for Sustainability through the Global Goals.

How does our work help?
Experiential play-based learning also helps to develop learners who think critically and have strong inquiry skills. Children learn through doing. In the Early Years and PYP, experiential play-based learning provides opportunities for learners to apply and exercise these skills. As learners move through the PYP into Diploma, teachers can employ this same experiential, emergent approach to engage learners of all ages.
The outdoors is a place that offers a diversity of experience that cannot be found inside the classroom, which is why so many IB schools are using the outdoors for curricular learning. To learn more about the benefits of learning outside of the classroom, please explore here.
Where do we work?
LTL works to develop outdoor learning in international schools across Europe, South & North Americal, and Asia to help develop learners with a deep understanding of pressing global issues – environmental, social and financial.
Our staffs have a broad background of experiences and skills, enabling us to understand and address diverse local contexts and challenges.
Using the school grounds and local environment allows students to experience complex, real-world situations and equips them with a broad view of the world.
We work closely with the International School Grounds Alliance to support our insight into the variety of approaches taken by individual schools around the world.
Many underlying issues and barriers to learning outside the classroom are shared by schools across the UK and globally. Our depth of experience allows us to apply knowledge that is second to none.
Whether it is facilitating a leadership approach to sustainability, providing a school grounds advisory visit or developing staff training, you can get in touch with us to discuss how best to take your outdoor learning and play forward here.
