David spent most of his career in the Countryside Commission/Countryside Agency, initially as Regional Director in the Eastern Region and in the South East, then as a Director with responsibility for rural economies, land management, tourism, planning and sustainable development.
In 2002 David moved to Defra, initially responsible for initiatives to improve the quality of public services in rural areas. He then took over responsibility for Government policy on landscape, forestry and outdoor recreation.
David Coleman retired from Defra in 2008.
