The legacy of Lord Remnant
We are deeply saddened to hear of the recent passing of our Patron, Lord Remnant.
With a passion for the environment and a long history of supporting young people through organisations such as The Prince’s Trust, Lord Remnant was a clear candidate for helping to found Learning through Landscapes in 1990.
For ten years, he served as our first Chairman of the Board, where he empowered and collaborated with the team of Trustees to establish the charity’s influence and presence. Lord Remnant’s distinguished career in the City and experience as Executive Chairman of an international asset management company helped to build a strong foundation for the Trust. His leadership was invaluable during Learning through Landscapes’ formative years.
Merrick Denton-Thompson, Trustee of Learning through Landscapes since 1990, said: “Lord Remnant really understood that experiential outdoor learning was absolutely critical to child development, and he also recognised that the school estate desperately needed to be improved to accommodate learning through nature. He was hands-on in his approach to the charity, passionate about the rights of young people and had a great empathy with the natural world. He was an exceptional individual.”
After stepping down as Chairman of the Board in 2000, Lord Remnant continued to support Learning through Landscapes’ work as a Patron.
Carley Sefton, our CEO, said: “We are so grateful to Lord Remnant and his family for all the incredible support they have given Learning through Landscapes over the years. Lord Remnant was a driving force in establishing Learning through Landscapes as the influential, expert-led outdoor learning charity that it is today. We will continue to honour his hard work by supporting all children and young people across the UK to connect with nature, embrace outdoor learning and have fun.”
