Primary Foundations Outdoors
Primary Foundations Outdoors supports primary school staff teams to make meaningful use of their outdoor spaces for learning and play. This practical, hands-on training builds skills, confidence, and shared understanding, helping outdoor learning become a valued and regular part of your school day.
Outdoor learning and play enrich the curriculum through memorable, hands-on experiences that support different learning styles, strengthen engagement, and improve wellbeing. With the right support, your school grounds can become a natural extension of the classroom.
Who this training is for
This training is ideal for primary schools that want to:

What to expect
Primary Foundations Outdoors is a full-day, in-person training course, tailored to your school’s context, priorities, and outdoor space. Our experienced trainers work with your staff to explore practical, curriculum-linked approaches that can be used immediately.
The day combines hands-on outdoor learning experiences with reflection and discussion, supporting staff to draw on their professional knowledge and apply it outdoors with confidence.
Key themes include:
- Why outdoor learning matters – How outdoor learning and play support engagement, creativity, behaviour, and problem-solving across the curriculum
- Leading learning outdoors – Practical approaches to organisation, safety, and behaviour that help staff feel confident teaching outside
- Curriculum-linked lesson ideas – Adaptable, low-cost ideas that work across subjects and age groups, using your existing outdoor space
- Planning for the future – Practical steps for embedding outdoor learning into your curriculum and school development planning
Throughout the day, staff experience outdoor learning as learners, reflect together as a team, and leave with clear next steps for their own practice.
